Research is Good!

I've been trying to do a little research everyday, to seek out products and methods that fit our needs, ideals and pocketbook. I joined the Green Parents Network (GPN) which is small yet but growing and really well designed. It's combined social networking with forums/discussions, making it a clean and manageable website.

I've already found some great links, based on the recommendations of others on GPN. Among those I really want to remember:
  • Diaper Safari -- most succinct, best info on cloth diapering I've found on the web, covering multiple methods and brands.
  • Little Star Baby Sling -- There's the Moby sling, and the EllaRoo Mei Hip Carrier, but I like how easy this one is to take on and off and get the baby in and out off -- essential, I assume, when it comes to elimination communication!!! (More on that to come, I've lots of information coming to me to peruse next week.)
  • Homemade diaper wash on Etsy -- chem-free! Except it has borax in it, which shouldn't be used with most diaper covers, as it can reduce their exterior water-repelling properties. An independent retailer of Bummis and other cloth diapers highly recommends it and tells all her customers about it. =)

Haha, it occured to me while wandering the aisles of Home Depot the other day that I'm gonna need to put in a retractable clothesline or two. We've got a dry rack now for our clothes, but a clothesline high up enough in the laundry room will be ultra-convenient and out of the way (the joys of being tall!) We just have to make sure the diapers are well wrung-out before hangin' or it may start a-rainin' LOL!!!!

Christy, don't know your thoughts on clothes dryers, or even if you have one, but using one for diapers makes them softer for little baby bums, and more convienient with all the diapers they go through! I know of one mom who had to iron her diapers because she had no dryer, and they were too stiff to put on little ones.

Thanks E! I'm very much an environmentalist and a spendthrift, so I'm first looking into hang drying. Of course I'll switch to the dryer if there are issues. I have a friend who hang drys without the problems you mentioned. Plus I hope to get organic cotton, bamboo or hemp -- some of the organic options are supposed to be soft even if never put in a dryer, in no small part because their clientele demands it (i.e. other crunchy mothers!) I would put a clothesline out in our backyard tomorrow if the HOA regs would allow it. =)

Was talking with my DH and remembered a time when we did line dry diapers. Just make sure you're using a heavy duty disinfectant, or are drying them IN THE SUN! The sun naturally disinfects. Diaper rash can rage out of control quickly otherwise.
