Fourth of July

I am REALLY proud of us. REALLY proud. Because Baby Girl got to enjoy the fireworks last night without getting throwing a sleepy-fit or being freaked-out by the lights and the dark and the BOOMS. Hurrah!

The E.P. and I worked hard to prepare her. Over three days, we carefully adjusted her sleep schedule so that she would be up on Monday evening without growing over-tired. And we talked with her a lot about nightime fireworks. We took several evening walks, one in the dark on a cloudy night to show her that it was safe. We sought out neighbors shooting off small fireworks nearby - we were always too late to watch, but we enjoyed the chase and indoctrinated Baby Girl to the fun with plenty of "BOOM! CRACK! KA-BOOMS!" in imitation (and silly celebration!) of the sounds.

Yesterday afternoon, we watched a documentary on the show at the National Mall. We also drew pictures of fireworks with Baby Girl. We ensured her that she'd love it.

And she did!!!!!

A Precious Evening with Daddy
I ended up too mosquito-bite ridden to go out, so The E.P. took our girl out by himself. Fortunately, we live just down the road from the local municipal fireworks launch site, so all they had to do was clear the trees to get a good view.

When they returned home, Baby Girl went quietly to bed. The E.P. told me she'd been very good and not gotten scared or cried once. (!!! Fabulous!!!)

This morning when I woke her up, I had to ask her about it. As she squirmed about on the changing pad I asked her, "Did you enjoy the fireworks?" At the sound of that last word, she got the sweetest smile on her face, and she delightedly sighed "Daaaddy". It was obviously a magical evening for them both. Too bad she probably won't remember it when she's older.
